Esports Recognized for Cash Incentives in India, Marking a Milestone for Competitive Gaming

Esports has been officially included in the list of sports eligible for cash incentives for medal winners at world and continental championships. This recognition by the Sports Ministry positions esports alongside traditional sports in India, reflecting its growing acceptance and significance.

The decision follows esports’ debut as an official medal sport at the 2023 Asian Games, where India participated in titles such as League of Legends, DOTA 2, Street Fighter V, and EAFC. With esports set to feature in the inaugural Olympics Esports Games in 2025, this inclusion further cements its place in the global sporting ecosystem.

The Indian government has demonstrated continued support for video gaming and esports, emphasizing its potential as a growing industry. The inclusion in the cash incentive program acknowledges the skill, discipline, and strategy required in competitive gaming, placing it on par with conventional sports.

One of the key challenges esports has faced in India is the instability of teams, with frequent disbanding after major tournaments making long-term careers difficult for players. This move is expected to foster greater team cohesion, encourage stability in the ecosystem, and create more sustainable career opportunities for aspiring players.

Beyond cash rewards, the policy also recognizes the role of coaches in shaping professional esports athletes. Under the framework, grassroots coaches who identify and nurture young talent will receive 30% of the cash incentives, developmental coaches guiding players to medal-winning performances will also receive 30%, while elite coaches providing advanced training will be awarded 40%.

This structured approach is expected to enhance the overall esports ecosystem in India by providing financial security, encouraging long-term player development, and reinforcing the industry’s credibility.
